History
of Indian Science, Technology and Culture Wazir Hasan Abdi has taught mathematics for more than four decades in different universities and institutions in India and abroad. He has authored many papers on mathematics and history of Indian science. K.T. Achaya's interest lie in the areas of dairy products, oilseeds and oils and nutrition, in which he has published numerous research papers and several books. His studies have resulted in books on oilseeds and technology and on the colourful mosaic of Indian food. Arun Kumar Biswas taught mineral engineering and metallurgy at the Indian Institute of technology, Kanpur (1963-95) and is at present Professor of History of Science at the Asiatic Society, Calcutta. Professor Biswas is a renowned scholar in the areas of mineral engineering, archaeo-metallurgy, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Literature and History of Science. Among his more than hundred papers are twelve publications on Science in India and recent two volumes on Minerals and Metals in Ancient India (1996), both highly acclaimed by critics. Vijaya Jayant Deshpande , received Doctorate in History of Science from the Punjab University in 1989. Her fields of interest are history of alchemy, chemistry and medicine, especially transmission of ideas between India and China. She worked as a research associate of Indian National Science Academy at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune where she carried out a critical study of the Sanskrit alchemical text Rasopanishad . In 1944-45, she was at the Beijing University as a post-doctoral fellow in India-China Cultural Exchange Programme. Presently she is a Welcome Fellow for the History of Medicine at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Her articles are published in various journals including the Indian Jounal of History of Science. Lallanji Gopal was formerly Director of Advanced Centre in Philosophy, Head, Department of Indian Philosophy and Religion, Sayajirao Gaekwad Professor of Indian Culture and Civilization and Professor of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. He has written and edited more than twenty books and articles. Narayani Gupta is Professor of History, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her publications include Delhi between two Impires 1803-1931 (OUP), Delhi, 1981. She is also the Founder Member of Conservation Society of Delhi. Rajesh Kochhar is a Professor of the Indian Institute of Astro-Physics, Bangalore. He has worked extensively in the fields of history of science and social relevance of science. A.
Rahman , is the Editor of the present volume. He was the first
Director of National Institute of Science, technology and Development
Studies (NISTADS), New Delhi. Pioneer in the field of History of Technology in India, Dr. Rahman has
authored edited and co-edited many books and learned papers. C.K.
Raju taught mathematics, statistics and did research in mathematical physics
for many years. He helped build Param:
India’s parallel supercomputer. He was a fellow at IIAS, Shimla and
wrote a book on Time. He is currently engaged in research about time at
the interface of science, religion and society at NISTADS, New Delhi. Vijaya Ramaswamy obtained her Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1981. In 1985 Oxford University Press brought out her book, Textiles and Weavers in Midieval South India. Her second book called Divinity and Deviance : Women in Virasaivism, also came out with OUP in 1996.She is an alumni of the School of Oriental and African studies, London and was senior Fullbright Scholar, Department of History, University of California, Berkeley. She has published many articles on economic history, Indian folklore, Religion and women's history in India and international journals. She was a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, shimla from 1992 to 1995. Her recent monograph Walking Nacked: Women Society and Spirituality in South India has been published by IIAS, Shimla in 1997. S.A.H. Rizvi is a mathematician specializing in medieval mathematics and astronomy. He received his doctorate in History of Science and has knowledge of many classical languages. He is teaching mathematics in Guru Nanak Dev University, Bidar. T.M.
Srinivasan began his research career on the problems of marine
sciences in India at the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. He
has published a number of research parers with (late) Professor N.K.
Panikkar and is currently compiling references from primary sources on 'Studies
Relating to Agricultural Practices in South India'. At present he
is Assistant Director at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
(formerly Regional Laboratory), Hyderabad. |
